Hello and welcome to the 2021 Pro Farmer Crop Tour and an update on this year’s soybean crop for the U.S. Soybean Export Council. I’m Clinton Griffiths…the Editor of Farm Journal Magazine and host of AgDay TV.

Scouts are heading out into the fields right now. The first day of the eastern leg of the tour starting out today in Ohio … ending in Noblesville, Indiana. And the Western leg starting in South Dakota … ending in Grand Island, Nebraska.

Along the way, roughly 100 scouts will survey more than two-thousand different fields. Here’s a look at how the process works.

“At it’s core this annual expedition is a discovery process. Held the third full week of august since 1993. scouts head to the fields and share what they find. The sampling and measurements are designed to get representative results from crop districts, states and the entire midwest, not individual fields or counties. Scouts measure three ears of corn, or count pods on soybean plants from just one location in each field’s survey. Each sample is identified by county so it can be tabulated by crop district. It’s a critical juncture in the growing season, for the last usda report two weeks ago and the next coming in a couple of weeks. The crop tour provides a boots on the ground look at this year’s crop.”

The Pro Farmer Crop tour is in its 29th year which allows comparisons not just year to year, but across decades of data. And we’re expecting quite a wide range of crop conditions as we travel this week. Out west, drought conditions persist … while in the east…it’s a much different story.

Pro Farmer

On Monday Scouts working roughly 20 routes across the western half of the state. The day starting in wet fields following well-timed overnight rains. The moisture expected to help the crop finish and even push plants to continue to develop.

Brian Grete:
“They’re getting the moisture they need to finish up the soybean crop field behind me here still has some flowers on it. So it has the potential to add more pods if it does get those late season rains. And like we got overnight here. So soybean crops, pretty decent clean crops so far from what we’ve seen out here along my route, and, you know, has potential, pod counts are pretty decent.”

Brian Grete

In its latest production report, USDA is calling for the Buckeye State to produce 58-bushels an acre for soybeans, 4-bushels ahead of last year. Again, ahead of the nation. Mike Vallery is a farmer in Sedalia, Ohio. During planting season, he reports he had perfect conditions and was able to get an early start.

Michael Vallery
“WE GOT STARTED ON APRIL THE 16TH AND FINISHED ON THE 19TH.”

Michael Vallery “我們在4月16號開始播種,19號完成。”

Though June saw dry conditions and warmer temperatures, July brought almost two times the normal amount of rainfall. As for insect pressure, there is not a lot of concern at the moment, but some diseases in beans have shown up in a few areas.

LAURA LINDSEY
“FROGEYE LEAF SPOT IS ONE THAT WE HEAR OF, AND THAT IS WEST CENTRAL OHIO, SOUTHERN OHIO, PRIMARILY. THERE ARE DISEASES. IT’S NOT A HUGE PROBLEM RIGHT NOW, BUT ALWAYS SOMETHING TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR.”

Laura Lindsy

In South Dakota…the numbers are running in the opposite direction. … With only 27% of the soybeans good to excellent … with only 1% of that the excellent category. And the drought condition issues obviously impacting yields. With USDA calling for 39-bushels an acre for soybeans — last year, it was 45-and-a-half. The numbers well below the national average of 50.

BRUCE BLYTHE
“I’M GOING TO BE VERY INTERESTED TO SEE THE CONDITION OF THE CORN AND SOYBEAN CROPS IN THE DAKOTAS, WESTERN MINNESOTA, NORTHWEST IOWA, THOSE THESE DRYNESS CONCERNS HAVE BEEN PERSISTING ALL SUMMER, IT’S BEEN HELPING KEEP BEFORE UNDER CORN AND SOYBEAN FUTURES.”

Bruce Blythe

And that’s what Scouts on the western leg of the tour are finding…Teams are traveling some of the better fields in the state of South Dakota Monday. The results at mid-day were mixed and variable … but definitely better than some scouts expected.

KAREN BRAUN
“WE’RE IN SOUTHEASTERN SOUTH DAKOTA, IN TURNER COUNTY AND LINCOLN COUNTIES. AND YET THE SOYBEANS ARE LOOKING. THEY’RE VARIABLE, BUT THEY ARE, THEY’RE ABOVE SO FAR, THE THREE-YEAR AVERAGE FOR WHAT WE WOULD FIND ON THIS TOUR, NOT AS GOOD AS LAST YEAR, BUT LAST YEAR WAS A PRETTY GOOD CROP AROUND HERE. AND YOU CAN TELL THAT THEY’VE BEEN DRY HERE. AND THAT MIGHT HAVE AFFECTED SOME POD COUNTS. KIND OF EARLIER ON IN THE SEASON, BUT THEY’VE STILL GOT A DECENT AMOUNT OF PODS, AND, YOU KNOW, MAYBE SOME OPPORTUNITY STILL.”

Karen Braun

Braun says its clear better genetics are helping they soybeans hold up in a dry year. Rains over the next couple of weeks could help the crop finish strong. And we will bring you day one soybean results tonight…during crop tour live. To watch…head to AgWeb.com forward slash Crop tour. Coverage starts tonight at 7 p.m. central. And we will continue to bring you results each day this week during the tour on behalf of the U.S. Soybean Export Council. Thanks for watching!

請訪問AgWeb.com/Crop Tour 觀看。
